Kind Quests ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the Kind Quests mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have.
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
We collect information you provide directly, as well as certain information automatically when you use the Service.
Account information
- Phone number — required to create an account and verify your identity via one-time SMS code.
- First name — displayed on your profile to other users.
- Date of birth — collected to verify that you meet our minimum age requirement. We do not display your exact date of birth publicly.
- Profile photo — optionally uploaded to personalize your profile. Photos are stored on our servers.
- Username — an optional display handle you can set during onboarding.
- Bio, skills, and occupation — optional profile fields that help others understand who you are.
Quest content
- Descriptions, titles, categories, photos, and timing details you include when creating quests.
Chat and message content
- Messages you exchange with other users after an offer is accepted. Chat is only available to matched participants.
Photos uploaded by users
- Profile photos and quest photos you upload. We apply server-side compression and size limits. You retain ownership of photos you upload.
Location data
- If you grant location permission, we use your GPS coordinates to show you nearby quests and to attach an approximate location to quests you create. We store your coordinates server-side solely for proximity matching. Other users never see your raw GPS coordinates — we show only a city or neighborhood name in the discovery feed. If you are accepted as a helper on a quest, the quest host's more precise location may be shared with you to facilitate the meetup. You can revoke location permission at any time in your device Settings.
Device and usage data
- Device type, operating system version, and app version — used to diagnose bugs and improve compatibility.
- Push notification tokens — used to deliver in-app notifications. You can disable notifications in your device Settings.
- Session data — when you log in, we create a session token stored securely on your device.
Feedback and aura data
- After a quest is completed, participants may exchange feedback in the form of Aura Points (a 100–1000 scale) and compliment tags (e.g. "Reliable," "Kind"). This data is stored and may be shown on user profiles to other Kind Quests users.
Report and moderation data
- If you report a user, quest, or message, we collect the report reason and related content to review for safety violations.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Account creation and authentication — to create your account and verify your identity via phone number OTP.
- Profile display — to show your name, photo, and optional profile details to other users in the discovery feed and conversations.
- Quest discovery — to surface nearby quests relevant to your location and interests.
- Messaging — to enable private chat between matched users (requester and helper).
- Safety and moderation — to review reports, enforce community guidelines, prevent abuse, and protect users from harassment, scams, and unsafe content.
- Notifications — to send you in-app and push notifications about new offers, messages, and quest updates. You control notification preferences.
- Abuse prevention — to detect and act on suspicious activity, spam, and violations of our Terms of Service.
- Service improvement — to understand how users interact with the app and fix bugs or improve features.
3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share limited information only as follows:
With other users
- Your first name, profile photo, username, bio, skills, and general location (city/neighborhood) are visible to other Kind Quests users in the discovery feed.
- Your exact profile details (full profile, stats) are only available to users you have a connection or interaction with, as described in our in-app privacy settings.
- Messages are private between matched participants only.
With service providers
- Twilio — your phone number is shared with Twilio solely to deliver SMS verification codes. See Twilio's Privacy Policy.
- Expo / Expo Push Notifications — push notification tokens are shared with Expo's push notification service to deliver notifications to your device.
- Neon (database hosting) — your data is stored in a cloud-hosted PostgreSQL database provided by Neon, Inc., subject to appropriate data processing agreements.
For legal reasons
- We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or governmental authority, or when we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Kind Quests, our users, or the public.
4. Location Data
Kind Quests does not automatically share a user's precise location. Users choose what location information to include in quest descriptions. Kind Quests requests your device location permission solely to show you nearby quests and to attach an approximate area to quests you create. We store coordinates server-side for proximity matching only.
We never display your raw GPS coordinates to other users — only a city or neighborhood name appears in the discovery feed. Any location detail shared with a matched helper comes from information you voluntarily include in your quest description or chat messages. You are in control of what you share and when.
You can revoke location access at any time via your device's Settings app. Without location access, the app will use a manually entered city or your last known neighborhood.
4a. Profile Photo Privacy
To protect user privacy before a connection is established, profile photos in the discovery feed are blurred or restricted and only become fully visible after an offer is accepted by both parties. This ensures that your photo is not freely viewable by all app users — only people you choose to connect with can see your full profile photo.
5. Data Retention
- Account data is retained for as long as your account is active.
- Quest and message data is retained to support the in-app experience and moderation history. Deleted quests are marked inactive but may be retained in anonymized form for safety review.
- Session tokens expire automatically and are revoked on logout or re-verification.
- OTP codes expire within 10 minutes and are deleted after use.
- Account deletion — you may delete your account at any time from within the app (Settings → Delete Account). Deletion permanently removes your profile, quests, offers, messages, and all associated personal data in a single atomic operation. You may also contact privacy@kindquests.app for assistance.
6. Security
We use industry-standard security measures including:
- HTTPS encryption for all data in transit.
- Hashed OTP codes — we never store your raw verification code.
- Session tokens are randomly generated and revoked on logout.
- Server-side access controls so users can only access data they are authorized to view.
No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
7. Children's Privacy
Kind Quests is intended for users who are at least 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. We collect date of birth during onboarding and enforce the minimum age requirement. If you believe a minor has created an account, please contact us at privacy@kindquests.app and we will remove the account promptly.
8. Your Rights and Choices
- Access and correction — you can view and update your profile information at any time within the app.
- Account deletion — you can delete your account directly from the app at any time via Settings → Delete Account. All your personal data, messages, quests, and offers are permanently removed. You can also email privacy@kindquests.app if you need assistance.
- Location — grant or revoke location permissions via your device Settings.
- Notifications — enable or disable push notifications via your device Settings or the Kind Quests app settings.
- Blocking — block any user from within the app to prevent them from seeing your profile or contacting you.
Depending on your jurisdiction (including the EU, UK, California, and other regions with privacy laws), you may have additional rights including the right to data portability and the right to restrict processing. Contact us to exercise these rights.
9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your California privacy rights, contact us at privacy@kindquests.app.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will notify you within the app or by other means. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
